Niepoort wines have been a staple in our Wine Cellar for decades, and Dirk Niepoort is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in red wine production in the Douro Valley. His legendary Fabelhaft has achieved cult status among wine enthusiasts worldwide.

For BASF, Niepoort has outdone himself with the Foundation Blend 1865. The striking label is a conversation starter, highlighting notable events from 1865—the year BASF was founded—while the wine itself is equally remarkable. Crafted from native Douro grape varieties—Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Amarela—the grapes were handpicked from vines aged 10 to 40 years. The wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation in wooden barriques and six months of oak ageing.

The result is a rich, expressive wine with enticing aromas of blackberries, plums, and sweet cherries, complemented by gentle oak notes and silky, well-integrated tannins. Foundation Blend 1865 is the perfect companion for a summer barbecue or simply savoring a relaxed evening after work—a true testament to Niepoort’s mastery and the Douro Valley’s exceptional terroir.
