The Merlot is a red wine grape originating from the Bordeaux region of France. The name Merlot is thought to derive from the Old French word for young blackbird, probably from the color of the grape. It is estimated to be the third most grown grape in the world and it typically produces a soft, medium-bodied red wine with juicy fruit flavors. Merlot wines often shows fresh dark fruit flavors such as plum, cherry, blueberries with spicy tones. The tannin levels are typically lower than Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc with more of fruit forward flavors. Merlot is a very versatile wine and pairs well with poultry, red meat, pork, pastas and salads.
